Dr. Paul Madtes Jr. earned a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Texas A & M University in 1980. Subsequently, he joined Dr. Dianna A. Redburn as a National Eye Institute postdoctoral fellow, focusing on the factors that influence normal development, using the rabbit retina as a model. Upon completion of the fellowship in 1982, Madtes joined the laboratory of Dr. Gerald Chader at the National Eye Institute. In 1985, Madtes joined the faculty at Point Loma Nazarene College as an Assistant Professor of Biology and Chemistry. In 1989, Madtes relocated to Mount Vernon Nazarene University, where he is Professor of Biology. Since 1993, he has also served as Chair of Biology. In 1990, to gain knowledge and to develop skills that help students, Madtes completed a second Ph. D., in biblical counseling, from Trinity Theological Seminary.

Madtes continued his biomedical research efforts by joining the laboratory of Dr. James S. King at the Ohio State University College of Medicine in 1990. He spent fifteen years with this research team, studying the development of the cerebellum, both in the North American oposum and in the mouse. A total of 26 original publications, 6 chapters, and 29 abstracts have resulted from more than 35 years of study of the development of the nervous system, in particular, the factors that control the process by which development occurs.

Madtes has been an active member of several professional societies, and presently is a member of the Society for Neuroscience, the International Society for Neurochemistry, and the International Society for Developmental Neuroscience.
